Based on the 1960 novella by Elizabeth Spencer, 'The Light in the Piazza' is a 2005 musical with words and score by Adam Guettel. The story revolves around the young Clara who suffers from a developmental disability due to a childhood accident. Clara falls in love with the dashing Fabrizio who, though smitten, does not initially comprehend the extent of her handicap. This title song of the show occurs towards the beginning of the second act. Clara’s mother Meg attempts to separate the lovers in an effort to protect her daughter from potential disappointment. The song embodies Clara’s outpouring of a torrent of emotions, a testament to her infatuation with Fabrizio.
