Australian composer Andrew Schultz is one of Australia’s most internationally respected composers. He is currently Professor of Music at UNSW Sydney and the 2021-22 Professor of Australian Studies at Harvard University. Composed in 1993, Suspended Preludes pairs together the unusual combination of double bass and piano. The composer masterfully creates a ‘meta-instrument’ from these two unlikely musical-companions, the instruments weaving a sonic tapestry whereby the players each contribute in equal parts timbral vibrancy to the musical narrative of the work. The seven preludes alternate between creating mysterious clouds of sound (in Resonate and Ground), lamenting melodic figures (in To sleep and Trans) and vibrant groove-based rhythmic patterns (in Piano drum and Gravity).
