Francis Poulenc’s Sonata for Clarinet and Piano was composed in 1962, though it bears the sentimentality and deeply romanticised fantasian impulses that might suggest that it belongs to an era long past. Premiered by the jazz clarinettist Benny Goodman and dedicated to a composer colleague Arthur Honegger (both composers belonging to a group famously known as ‘Les Six’) the Sonata bears many characteristics commonly associated with Poulenc’s music – charming virtuosic flurries complemented by moments of striking melodic profundity.
