Max Bruch was a German composer, five years younger than Brahms and three years older than Dvorak. Historically, he is very much belonging to the school of German romanticism that celebrated and followed in the traditions of Beethoven, Schubert and Schumann. His 'Eight Pieces, Op. 83' are traditionally performed in a clarinet/viola/piano formation though the cello substitution for the viola part is not uncommon. Each of the eight movements are reasonably brief though each contains a universe of detail and expression. A distinctive feature is the equal importance placed on each role within the trio, always in a constant state of dialogue.
