Incorporating stylistic elements of his Italian and French contemporaries, English composer Henry Purcell (1659-1695) composed music with a distinctively original voice. In three distinct sections, 'Sweeter than Roses' commences with a winding chromatic recitative where limited text is heavily ornamented in a melismatic fashion. A brief and energetic middle section leads to a lilting final section featuring the agility of the soprano.
