Written in 1956 by Jalacy Hawkins, I Put a Spell on You achieved widespread recognition through covers by artists such as Annie Lennox, Bette Midler in her role of ‘Winifred Sanderson’ in the 1993 film Hocus Pocus, and Nina Simone. It is the latter interpretation upon which today’s performance has modelled its rendition. The lyrics tell the story of a bitter lover chastising their cheating partner.
